City Transformation & Transport Planning

From the initial business case to Project delivery, there is a lot that goes into an infrastructure project like Cross River Rail. Students will unlock key elements of an infrastructure business case, plan the design of stations and transport systems, and build their knowledge of above-station precincts and the city-shaping impacts of major infrastructure delivery.

Explore the liveability of a city like Brisbane – by applying human-centred design principles to create spaces that are accommodating, while considering the experience of people living, working, and visiting South East Queensland.

Investigate movement around cities and how this impacts future designs. Embark on a mission to find the different roles transport plays within a community in the past, the present and into the future.

Students will be immersed in facts and figures to prompt them to think about capacity, population growth and future capacity. Students will then be able to analyse transport through mathematics problems.

Exercises

What actually leads people to move from one place to another? We group the reasons into two main categories – push and pull factors.

We look at isomaps of walking time to each station, where would you locate a new station?

What has changed in street view in downtown Brisbane in the last 20 years? We examine what’s changed and what’s stayed the same.

Using satellite data over time, we look at the density of real estate around each station, and the land use. What can you tell us about who may use the station?

Using a demographic matrix and ABS data, we look at who lives around the station, mapping certain characteristics.

Extension: Social health
There’s more to the story than what’s recorded through the census. Using Torrens Social Health Atlas and find out more about the demographics around the stations.

Using historical information curated at the Experience Centre, and information available online, research the history of each station site considering who has lived there, what commercial interests have influenced the suburb, and consider how the land has been used by the community.

Taking the knowledge from some of the activities above, students are invited to make some tangible changes to Cross River Rail stations. Students provide an aspirational view of how they think each locale (around each station) should/could look in the future, by 2033.

City Transformation Rich Task

City Transformation Rich Task (2 days)

Sessions are designed specifically to be delivered in the Experience Centre and to encourage students to think creatively, work logically, communicate ideas, synthesise their results, analyse different viewpoints, and evaluate findings. Teachers can choose a 2, 3.5 or 5 hour experience by choosing one session or registering for additional sessions. There is an option for teachers to continue a line of enquiry and collaboration when returning to the classroom. All resources will be provided and teachers can choose what they deliver, the format of delivery and the time taken to deliver material.

Students will explore the liveability of Brisbane. They will apply human-centred design principles to create a space that accommodates liveability by considering the experience of people living, working and visiting SEQ.

Students investigate movement around the city and how it has impacted the future design. They embark on a mission to find the different roles within a community in the past, present, and future.

It’s all about facts and figures and gets students thinking about capacity, population growth and future capacity. Students will design a transport mathematics problem to challenge other students.

Further lessons, activities and PPTs and to continue a line of enquiry and collaboration when returning to the classroom. Teachers can choose what they deliver, the format of delivery and the time taken to deliver material.

Supporting Activities

What’s in the power of a shape? Students learn about the most efficient ways to create a tunnel, including the forces involved in shapes, the machines, and the people on the team. They will investigate design and the planning of a tunnel, before creating their own. Students will use their inquiry skills to question, predict, and test, in this physical science program.

This program adds in some data crunching to the day! Students learn that in order to make decisions based on human-centred design, facts and numbers are required. Students will consider the data required when designing spaces and transport for the population. They will explore the way people move and how this impacts the community.

Students investigate the historical context surrounding the Cross River Rail discoveries made when excavating material. They will develop an historical understanding through key concepts such as tools throughout the ages. Students will consider evidence of continuity and change, as well as empathise with the perspectives of people from the past.

Fast Finisher Activities

Data scramble is a way to get students moving. It’s designed to have them thinking about where they would use these skills in different industries.

Students match two sets of cards. One set will be a liveability element. The other set will be examples of different liveability elements.

World Map is a way to get students thinking about their place in the world and assists them to conceptualise different cultures and innovations around the world.

The extended budget template provides space for the students to add the source of the item and give a justification as to why the item was chosen.
